WHAT and WHERE IS PANAMA:

The Republic of Panamá is located bewteen Central  and South America, linking the Americas, North and South, with, approximately, 29,157 sq. miles.    The limits  are the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the south, Costa Rica to the West, Colombia to the East.   The Capital of the Republic of Panamá is the City of Panamá, which has a population of approximately 1.5 million inhabitants.   The type of Government is Constitutional, with elections held every five years.      The principal economic injections into the economy of the Republic is based on services.     Panamá is well known because of its banking center, the Free Zone of Colon, its Merchant Marine and the Panamá Canal.    Our monetary system is based on the U.S. Dollar; nonetheless, we have our own fractionary currency, the Balboa, which by law, is equivalent to the U.S. Dollar.-

The coast of Panamá was sighted by Rodrigo de Bastida, in 1501, and was visited by Columbus in 1502.   Vasco Nunez de Balboa, crossed the Isthmus and “discovered” the Pacific Ocean on September 13, 1513.      The Spanish colonies were ravaged by many pirates; among the more famous, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir Henry Morgan.   Morgan destroyed the old city of Panamá, which was found in 1519.   Freed from Spain, Panamá joined Colombia in 1821.-

The Republic of Panamá, declared its independence from Colombia on November 3rd, 1903.     On November 18th, 1903 the Republic of Panamá and the United States of America signed the Panamá Canal Treaty.     Under said treaty, the Government of the United State proceeded to build the Panamá Canal, having over the same the limited jurisdiction granted by said treaty.      In 1977 a new treaty provided for a gradual takeover by the Republic of Panamá of the Canal, and the withdrawal of U.S. troops,  both to be completed on December 31, 1999.-

Today, the Republic of Panamá has moved into the privatization of several of the Government control entities of services, Port facilities, granting concessions to very important international and well recognized corporations, telephone, (Bell South - U.S.A.) and (Cable & Wireless - British), highways, (PYCSA - Mexico) and (ICA - Mexico); has granted new landing permits to well known airlines, among them Eva Air, (Taiwan); Delta Airlines, (U.S.A.); increasing the traffic of air-cargo, as well as the traffic of passanges, tourist as well as business people, who are coming to Panamá to create new ventures using all the legal infrastructure already in place in the Republic of Panamá.    Among the new ones enacted are the law on Fundations of private interest, which together with the Corporate Law of 1927 and the Trust Law are providing a legal framework for Bankers, Trust Corporations, Insurance and Re-Insurance Corporations, as well as for Shipping Enterprises from around the world.-
